Nicola Bailey

I am Nicola Bailey and I’m an educationist specialising in parent and family support. I have experience of working across many levels of education: from pre-school, secondary as an assistant head, through to further and post compulsory education. My Ph.D. is in education and focuses on the effects of parent support on children's outcomes and I am also a trained life coach.

My career background includes working as a nursing sister in the community, with children and their families. My work there was focused on child health and child protection. I have also worked as a foster carer for mothers with babies at risk and, I’ve worked for many years as the director of a community-based charity that I founded to offer family support, education and training to disadvantaged women. My long-term focus and work with families, especially that of mothers and their children is based on the disconnect between the academic and social understanding of the importance of parenting and its lack of prioritisation. Getting it right matters for everyone’s sake; for children it has a significant impact on their adult life, for parents it determines the quality of the family’s cohesion (the glue that holds families together) and for society it directs the shape of our communities.

I am also a parent and know how tough it can be sometimes to know what to do, when to do it and where to go if you don't have answers. That's why I believe as a society we need to acknowledge the importance of parenting and the power of community and maximise on developing much needed non-judgemental support where and when it's needed - not just for some, for every parent.
